Good design is often about finding value in the details that others overlook. Leading through innovation, even when the innovation comes from improving something that seems to be working.
When we looked at the traditional plastic lumber-style container, we saw a product category with strong visual appeal, materials and manufacturing that works – but also clear opportunities to push the industry forward and improve.
For procurement and facility teams, a waste and recycling container isn’t judged by how it looks on day one. Rather, it’s judged by how it performs over time; how it affects behavior, and how it holds up after years of use, servicing, weather exposure and daily traffic. For us, the sustainability of the product should also be strongly considered – how is a bin made, what is it made with, and how does the manufacturing process affect our environment.
These thoughts were the starting point for the Fusion Series. How can our products drive change for the organizations using them. We wanted to keep the familiar lumber-style aesthetic that people love, while rethinking the components that affect long-term value.
Back to the Beginning
To get where we are now, we must look at where this started. Busch Systems’ collection of plastic lumber containers was a result of finding solutions to the problems others were experiencing. Plastic lumber material, while durable, is heavier and places significant strain on the hinge system used for the doors. Additionally, certain design elements can be used for simplicity and ease of construction but are not designed for the wear and tear of busy public spaces.
Through our attention to detail and an intention to create for impact, we found solutions. Screws vs. nails; better vs. faster construction became the success behind our Aura, Vision and Venture plastic lumber style containers. Long-lasting and made for outdoor environments from the Texas desert to the Canadian Rockies.
Innovating for Change
For Busch Systems, the innovation never stops. Though we have products that solve the problems of others on the market, we are always looking ahead. Phase one – make the plastic lumber container better than anyone else has made it before. Mission accomplished. Now back to the drawing board – What do people love and, using our sustainable, research-backed knowledge, what can we do better?
With the Fusion Series, this is what we focused on. By combining sustainable recycled content; manufacturing processes that produce a lower carbon footprint; an understanding that signage is the key to communicating waste diversion programs; and thoughtful design elements that build on the initial improvements we made with our plastic lumber containers, The Fusion Series was born!
The Fusion Series wasn’t created to reinvent the category for the sake of it. We developed it because the market showed us what works, what doesn’t, and where sustainable improvement matters.
The Final Result
The Fusion Series is the bin where everything comes together. Inside, a smarter mix of recycled materials and innovative manufacturing elevates the classic lumber-look container. Outside, larger, bolder signage and seamlessly secured panels make your message impossible to miss – and easy to change.
The Fusion Series: the result of creating for impact and an understanding that sustainable design drives positive environmental change.
